The Tri County Northeast Wolfpack opened triangular action at Emerson-Hubbard High School on Thursday, September 24, with a hard-fought 0-2 loss to Lyons-Decatur Northeast.
LDNE took control early in the opening set, defeating the Wolfpack 25-12. TCNE responded with a much stronger performance in the second set, battling point-for-point before narrowly falling 26-24.
Sophomore Cora Ridenour led the Wolfpack offense with eight kills on 23 attempts, while senior Joslyn Mackling added five kills. Sophomore Delaney Fuchser contributed four kills, senior Briley Anderson added two, and junior Ally Belt finished with one. TCNE recorded 20 kills as a team.
Belt directed the offense from the setter position, finishing with 19 assists. She also had a strong night at the service line, going a perfect 12-for-12 with one ace and seven service points. Emily Mitchell, Jayda Stallbaum and Aubrey Mitchell each added an ace for the Wolfpack.
Defensively, TCNE totaled 38 digs. Emily Mitchell led the way with nine digs, while Mackling and Belt each collected seven. Aubrey Mitchell and Ridenour chipped in five digs apiece. Belt and Aubrey Mitchell also combined for the Wolfpack's lone block of the match.
Despite the difficult opening set, the Wolfpack showed plenty of fight in the second, pushing LDNE beyond the usual 25-point mark before coming up just short, 26-24.
In the final game of the night, the Wolfpack volleyball team picked up another convincing victory, defeating the Winnebago Lady Indians in straight sets, 2-0.
The Wolfpack controlled the match from the opening serve, cruising to a 25-10 victory in the first set before completing the sweep with a 25-15 win in set two.
TCNE put together a balanced offensive performance, finishing with 21 kills on 46 attacks and a .283 team hitting percentage. Senior Briley Anderson led the Wolfpack attack with six kills on 11 attempts and no errors, posting an impressive .545 hitting percentage. Senior Joslyn Mackling and sophomore Cora Ridenour each added five kills, while sophomore DeLaney Fuchser contributed four kills. Junior Ally Belt added one kill on her only attack of the match.
The Wolfpack also created problems for Winnebago from the service line, recording 10 aces. Belt led the charge with five aces while serving 13 times and scoring 10 service points. Ridenour added two aces, while Emily Mitchell, Jayda Stallbaum and Anderson each recorded one.
Belt directed the TCNE offense with 18 assists, accounting for all but one of the team's 19 assists.
Defensively, the Wolfpack collected 26 digs. Mackling led the team with eight digs, followed closely by Mitchell with seven. Ridenour added five digs, while Belt finished with four.
TCNE's serve receive was also solid, with Mitchell successfully handling all eight of her serve-receive opportunities without an error. Ridenour was also perfect on three opportunities.
The straight-set victory gave the Wolfpack another strong showing as they look forward to a busy week ahead with games against Wakefield, Wynot and Pender.
