Eagles Overcome Lethargic Start to Roll to a 52-26 District Win at Wausa

Eagles overcome lethargic start to roll to a 52-26 district win at Wausa…………………

The old adage that, “defense travels”, was apparent early on in Wausa, as the the Eagles were quite stifling.  In the meanwhile, a generally proficient offense struggled to get on track.  The second period was the offensive squads’ period while the defense had burps.  The second half was again a total effort.

As the game progressed, both sides of the football started clicking early in the second half, as the Eagles rolled to a 52-26 district win at Wausa.

Allen struck first on their second possession of the game as Lukas Oswald scored from 4 yards out.  The PAT failed.  Wausa responded with a 32 yard pass to tie the game at 6-6.

From that point on, the Eagles were more consistent in both phases of the game.  Lukas Oswald scored at the 6:21 mark of the second period to put the Eagles up 14-6 as he also added the PAT run.

Wausa scored on the first ensuing offensive play, running 55 yards straight up the middle untouched.  The PAT was stopped, leaving the Eagles up 14-12.

Allen put together a methodical drive to close the first half, as Anthony Isom capped it off with a three yard run.  Oswald ran in the PAT to push the lead to 20-12 at the 0:59 mark of the period.  Moments later the defense tallied a score, as Brogan Jones added a “pick six” interception of 15 yards, allowing the lead to balloon to 28-12 at intermission.

The Eagles came out of halftime and immediate hit the end zone on their first two possessions to put the lead at 44-12 before half of the third frame had passed.  Anthony Isom and Ryan Anderson hit the end zone on 7 and 3 yard runs respectively.  Oswald ran in one PAT, and threw to Isom for the other.

Scoring on the night for Allen was capped by an Oswald to Cooks 11 yard pass.  Isom added the PAT.

Wausa added a touchdown very late to close the score to 52-26.

Defensively, Brogan Jones led tacklers with 10 and an interception return for a touchdown.  Anthony Isom and Josh Olesen added 8 tackles.

Offensively, the yardage was fairly evenly spread in the attack.  Isom had 84 yards, Kobe Kumm 72, Oswald 52 and Anderson 41.  Cooks had the lone reception on the night for a score.

The win moves the Eagles’ record to 5-1, 2-1 in district action.  The Eagles will host Randolph, Friday, October 18th with a 7:00 p.m. start scheduled.

COACHES COMMENTS:

“Without a doubt, Wausa played their best game of the year against us tonight.  Their defense early created issues, but our kids stepped up and we resolved the issues.  Our defense was fairly consistent, although we allowed a few big plays that were blown assignments or not playing with a higher sense of urgency. I think that the kids were looking a little ahead for next week, and were not totally ready mentally.   What we did do well, is stayed on course game plan wise, trusted the process, and continued to answer the call when adversity hit us early in the game.  We will need to start out much faster this next week or it could be a long night.”
