Eagles take part in a talented Lewis & Clark field……….

The competition was top notch on Monday, May 2nd, at the Hartington Sports Complex.  The weather was perfect for a meet filled with 17 schools, full of Class C talent and Class D potential state medalists.  The crowd would not be disappointed.

The Eagle girls squad, placed sixth in the field, just 14 points from the runner up position.  The boys came in tenth in the field, but produced the only gold medalist performance by either squad on the day.

The gold medalist performance was turned in the by 4X800 relay, as they posted an 8:51 clocking, 15 seconds ahead of runner-up, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.  Members were S.T. O’Keefe, Garrett Brentlinger, Tayler Kumm, and Bud Kneifl.  The gold medal performance was the third straight, and the history of success in the event at districts will be looked to be stretched to 12 out of last 13 years of qualifying for the state meet.

The boys had multiple medalists.  Tayler Kumm, placed fourth in the 3200 and third in the 1600.  S.T. O’Keefe snared a third in the 800 meters with a 2:06 clocking.

The girls had two stellar performances.  Lexi Oswald nailed down three impressive finishes in the 800, 1600, and 3200.  She placed fourth in the 800, third in the 1600, and third in the 3200. Oswald added a fourth medal, running on the fifth place 4X400 relay team.   Her 3200 time now stand second in Class D with one week before districts.

Kaylen Smith, took home a second in the 300 hurdles, third in the 100, and third in the 100 hurdles.  Smith also ran a leg on the fourth place 4X100 relay.

Senior, Gabby Sullivan, also won multiple medals as she finished 4th in the high jump, sixth in the triple jump, ran a leg of the 4X100 relay, and 4X400 relay.

The Eagles now focus on the final regular season meet at the Winside Invitational, at Laurel, on Thursday, May 5th.   Districts are set for Wednesday, May 11th in Hartington with the shot put and discus starting at 9:30 a.m. and all other field events starting at 10:00 a.m.

COACHES COMMENTS:

“The teams competed well.  We had a few surprises, and a few disappointments, but it was a tremendous athletic event, which only left the kids hungry to finish this season as planned.  Our upperclassmen showed some real class, stepping up and competing well today.  The girls appear to be facing a two or three team race for a district championship next week and the boys field is up for grabs with 4 teams having a shot at winning the title.  It should be a real test, to qualify athletes, as well as a push to capture the district titles.”
