Eagle track squads participate at Hartington-Newcastle Invitational….
The weather cooperated more favorably this week at the Hartington Sports Complex, allowing the Eagle track squads to participate gamely in the Hartington-Newcastle Invitational.
The Lady Eagles posted a fourth place finish, while the boys tied for sixth. The field consisted of Hartington-Newcastle, Cedar Catholic, Ponca, Emerson-Hubbard-Pender, Walthill, Wynot, Bancroft-Rosalie and Allen.
The wind was a factor early in the meet, but as sunset came on, the winds subsided, allowing the Eagles to run under decent conditions.
Headlining top performances on the day, Kaylen Smith collected four second place medals. Smith, a returning state qualifier in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles ran well in her outdoor debut. Smith also ran second in the first ever 100 meter effort. Smith then ran a leg of the 4 X 100 relay.
Lexi Oswald posted an impressive, 5:57.9 clocking in the 1600. Oswald also made a nice run in the 3200, just missing gold in 13:24. Oswald also collected a medal on the 4 X 400 relay.
The boys were led by, junior, Tayler Kumm in the 1600. Kumm out sprinted a Class C field of top milers to post a 4:47.9 time to win the gold. Kumm also ran a led on the second place 4 X 800 relay team. He then collected a sixth place medal in the open 800 and ran a leg on the 4 X 400 relay.
Senior, S.T. O’Keefe, had a nice day on the track, as he ran an opening leg on the 4 X 800 relay, a first ever run in the 400 which medaled fifth, a fifth place finish in the 800 and a leg on the 4 X 400 relay.
As tough as the conditions were, several of the young Eagle track members collected medals. (see results)
What also was impressive were some of the efforts from athletes who hit personal bests at the first meet of the season. Kaitlyn Madsen, in the 300 hurdles, Desi Martell in the high jump, Garrett Brentlinger in the 300 hurdles hit personal/career bests. All of these athletes will be medal winners, sooner or later with the improvement that they have shown.
The Eagles will compete on Thursday, April 14th at the Homer Invitational. Meet time is 4:00.
COACHES COMMENTS:
“Both teams were very competitive today. They did not back down from the challenge of running against some pretty darn stiff competition. I felt the girls gave us a very solid effort, but we were a little inconsistent in a couple of events, but steady. Several girls did a nice job today, and they are going to be very solid as the season moves forward. The boys had their work cut out, as multiple returning state qualifiers were their competition. They too, competed well, and got great experience, and confidence running in this meet. Both teams will take what they learned today and shape it into more success as the season progresses. Nice job teams.”
