Eagles Fall on Late Tigers Score at Osmond 32-27
Eagles fall on late Tiger score 32-27 at Osmond………….
Results of all things are the sum of all parts. Nothing could be more accurate as Osmond came from behind to defeat the Eagles of Allen 32-27 on Friday.
The Eagles seemed to have all the parts in place for most of the night, but a handful of plays allowed Osmond to stay in the game and ultimately win the game.
The Eagles scored three of the first four times they possessed the ball and had very good offensive flow, while the defense played fairly consistently.
After the Eagles stopped Osmond on their first possession, the Eagles methodically moved the ball down the field scoring on a Gabe Reinert 3 yard run to take a 6-0 lead.
Osmond responded by hitting a 40 yard touchdown pass on their next possession to tie the game, but the Eagles responded with a second long drive that put them up 14-6 when Gabe Reinert popped through the middle on a 23 yard run. Nate Oswald added the PAT run.
In the second period the Eagles again marched the field, capped off by a Nate Oswald 2 yard run. Santiago Tinajero kicked the PAT for a 21-6 lead. At this point the Eagles seemed to be in firm control of the game.
Late in the second period after holding the Tigers on downs on the Eagle side of the field, a Tiger interception allowed them one last chance before half to gain momentum, and they did just that on a 26 yard touchdown pass to pull within 21-12 at intermission.
Opening the third period, Allen used over six minutes of the clock and drove deep into Osmond territory, only to come up empty. A wide open fourth down pass missed its target. Osmond could not mount a drive either, punting back to the Eagles. An interception allowed the Tigers good field position and they scored on a 20 yard pass to cut the lead to 21-18 late in the period.
The Eagles then drove only to stall, allowing Osmond the ball deep in their territory. Osmond mishandled a snap, allowing the Eagles another opportunity. The Eagles with a first and goal at the one yard line fumbled the ball back to the Tigers.
A defensive stop gave Allen the ball with just over 9 minutes to go, but Osmond forced a three and out near midfield. The Allen punt went high and short, bouncing straight backwards past all of the Eagles covering the kick and a lone Tiger only had to pick up the ball and run it in for a touchdown. An unlikely event put the Tigers up 24-21 at the 7:15 mark of the final period.
Allen responded with a 7 play drive down the field, when Gabe Reinert again shook loose on a 37 yard jaunt. The Eagles regained the lead 27-24 with 5:39 left. Then Osmond responded by keeping a desperate situation alive by escaping a big pass rush and picking up a first down on a long yardage play. The Tigers converted eventually on a 2 yard run after the a big pass play deep into Eagle territory with 3:03 remaining.
The Eagles then could not answer and Osmond hung on for the win.
The Eagles outgained the Tigers, 308-295, but of Osmond’s yardage total, 5 plays yielded most of their yards. The Eagles were led by Gabe Reinert’s 101 yard effort on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Nate Oswald was 8 of 16 passing, with 3 interceptions. Ty Krommenhoek led the receivers with four catches for 43 yards.
Nate Oswald had 10 tackles, Josh Olesen and Gabe Reinert each had 8. Olesen added a fumble recovery.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-1 on the season. Next action is scheduled for Friday, September 3rd against the Mead Raiders at Allen. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
Coaches Comments:
“Our kids played their butts off tonight, only to come up short. A handful of plays in the game kept Osmond close, and we were not fortunate to have them go our way. We have been on the other side of that, so what we need to do is make sure those types of plays, or decisions do not have any influence of a game on our side of the ball. We will get back to work on some identified shortcomings, and there are shortcomings that need addressing. Our kids will regroup after this. Mead will provide a very healthy challenge to our mental and physical toughness next week.”
