It was a game that saw defense, offense, unusual plays, momentum swings, but when the dust cleared Friday night, the Eagles of Allen defeated the Pender Pendragons in solid fashion by a 44-28 count.

The first half was more defensive in nature as the Eagles took the lead first, after a Pender turnover to go up 6-0 on a 5 yard Kobe Kumm run.

Pender responded minutes later on a 5 yard run by Braxton Volk to take a 7-6 at the end of the first period.  Allen’s defense remained very solid holding the Pendragons from the score board the rest of the half.  Allen scored shortly before the end of the first half, grinding the ball down the field.  Kobe Kumm carried over from the one yard line and then he hit Reed Hingst for the PAT to put the Eagles up 14-7 at intermission.

The Eagles mounted a opening drive in the third period, but a fumble near mid-field allowed Pender to drive for the tying score.  In an unusual way, Pender’s quarterback threw a pass, Steven Sullivan for the Eagles, swatted it back to the quarterback, who then caught it and started to run for the end zone.  The ball was stripped by the Eagles defense and it fell into the end zone, where two Eagles whiffed on recovering it and the Pender quarterback found the ball.

The result was a tie game at 14-14 midway through the third period.

Allen responded with a drive near the end of the third period, as Anthony Isom punched the ball over from one yard to put the Eagles up at 20-14 at the end of the third period.

The fourth period saw both teams account for 36 points and some plays that each thought may be enough to win the game.  Allen extended its lead to 28-14 early in the period on an Anthony Isom to Ty Krommenhoek pass of 20 yards.  Kumm ran in the PAT.  Moments later, the Eagles forced a Pender punt.  The snap sailed into the end zone, and a safety was recorded to push the Eagle lead to 30-14.  After Pender then kicked the ball to the Eagles, a drive to increase the lead to 38-14 was put together, as Kumm, scored his third rushing touchdown.  Kumm hit Reed Hingst on the PAT.

Pender didn’t quit and an errant Eagle pitch midway through the fourth period, allowed the Pendragons to hit a quit scoring pass to close the lead to 38-22.  Pender then popped up an onside kick just past the Eagle front line players, and recovered.  One play later they scored again, and what seemed comfortable as a lead had evaporated to a 38-28 lead and 5:10 still remained in the game.

Allen recovered the third attempt of Pender to regain an onside kick, and within seconds, Anthony Isom ended any Pender hopes as he  bolted 50 yards right up the middle of the Pendragon defense.  The Allen stopped the Pendragons on their next series, allowing the offense to run out the clock.

Offensively, Anthony Isom carried 22 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns.  He threw one pass in the third period for a touchdown to Ty Krommenhoek.  Kobe Kumm added 74 yards on 21 carries.

Defensively, Isom topped the tackle charts with 17 stops.  Ryan Anderson and Kobe Kumm had 9, Reed Hingst 8,

Steven Sullivan 8, and Sullivan blocked one punt.  Reed Hingst added an interception late in the game.  Josh Olesen pounced on two Pender fumbles.

The win moves the Eagle season record to 4-0, 2-0 in district play.  Due to COVID-19 at Wynot, next week’s game at Allen, against Wynot, has already been postponed, leaving the Eagles next in action, Friday, October 9th against Walthill in Allen.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

COACHES COMMENTS:

“The defense had another good game.  Our defense seemed to get stronger as the game progressed.  Offensively, we played lethargically through the first quarter and one half, but then got our tempo and intensity level to where we needed it to be and took control of the game.  We are slowly emerging into a confident squad and will keep working on little things that still need attention.  Good win team!”
