HEALTHY MENTAL HEALTH PRACTICES DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

From Mrs. Kneifl

Dear Allen Families,

The current global situation with the on going COVID-19 (Coronavirus) seems to be reaching us all in one way or another. It may seem like it is far away or close to home. Regardless, our students and families are seeing information on the news, phones, word of mouth, etc. Everyone processes information differently and your or your child(ren) may have great concerns about COVID-19. There is a lot of information regarding physical things you can do to prevent the spread of the virus, and I hope that you and your families will utilize those suggestions. However, as the school counselor, I would like to address important mental health practices that you should become familiar with during these challenging and uncertain times.

It is important to keep up to date on the current threats to your area, business and organization closings, and any preventive health updates. For mental health purposes, it may be a good practice to limit times and amounts in which you and your families are exposed to information.

Adults and children may become overwhelmed as they are dealing with circumstances beyond their control. Have informative and calm conversations with your children about possible changes in routine and allow for sharing of feelings and concerns. Children may also wish to journal and/or draw in order to process the emotions they are experiencing.

There are things you and your family can do to practice good mental health. See the attached flyer for helpful suggestions. It is our hope that all our families stay healthy!!
