Friend ends Eagle season in round one of the playoffs…..

The wind was definitely a factor, as Friend’s defense crowded the line of scrimmage, forcing errant passes and made running the ball very difficult for the smaller Eagles.  Also, kicking the ball when going into the wind was a night mare for the Eagles.

All said, the final score of 52-12 looks like the game was never close.  Statistically, the Bulldogs outgained the Eagles 259-215, but six Eagle fumbles and one interception compounded the outcome.  Through a very competitive first period the Bulldogs jumped to a 16-6 lead.  One Bulldog score was the product of an Eagle turnover, as well as one Eagle drive ended deep in Friend territory.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 32-6 at intermission following two other Eagle turnovers.  Allen never recovered from the onslaught of errors.  The Eagles substituted early in the second half, as the Bulldogs continued with starters.

The lead swelled to a 44-6 score by period end.

Kyle Smith hit Devin Twohig on the next to last play of the first period to pull the Eagles with 10 at 16-6.  Smith scored the final touchdown of the season on a 5 yard run in the final period.

Smith led the rushing department, carrying 29 times for 126 yards and a score.  Twohig caught all three of the Eagle completions, for 35 yards and one score.

Isaac Verzani and Kyle Smith led the tacklers with 13 each.  Smith returned one Friend pass interception back 39 yards right before halftime.  Verzani added a fumble recovery.

The loss ends the Eagle season at 5-4.  Four seniors played in their final game.  Blake McCorkindale, Jacob Williams, Levi Woodward and Luis Rivera.  20 underclassmen will return, along with a group of incoming eighth graders to start the 2018 season.

“They were a good team, but we made them real good, by turning the ball over and missing a few defensive assignments.  It will be a time to retool some of our positions, but the team was a pleasure to work with and at times we were very good, and sometimes we struggled.  The younger kids that never got their names in the paper deserve much credit for working hard to make our starting groups better daily.  Nonetheless, we have a solid group returning next year, with a huge amount of experience.  Congratulations to the team for their season.”
