Mistakes and missed opportunities key in Eagle 48-22 loss to Randolph….

It was a night, the Eagles wish they could have back.  Two turnovers inside their own 10 yard line and two drives that stalled inside the 15 were critical in allowing Randolph to win 46-22 in Allen on Friday.

The Cardinals were led on the evening by Alex Schmit, who carried over 30 times for approximately 220 yards.  The bigger and stronger offensive line was the key to the success for the Cardinals.

The size factor also played part in the rushing game for the Eagles, as they could only pick up 111 yards via the ground on the evening, but did hit the air for 257…which kept the game close.

Schmit opened the scoring for Randolph in the first period with a pair of runs from 5 and 3 yards.  The Cardinals led 14-0 after a period.  The Eagles responded on a 71 yard touchdown pass by Kyle Smith to Jacob Williams to close the lead to 14-6, but the Cardinals responded after an Eagle fumble at their own 9 yard line.  It appeared on the play that the Eagles would break the play for a score, but instead dropped the handoff.  Randolph punched the turnover in to lead 22-6.

The Eagles responded with a long drive when Kyle Smith ran over from the one.  Noah Carr added the PAT to cut the lead to 22-14 with only 24 seconds left in the half.  Randolph immediately hit a big pass to the Eagle one and called time out with 3 seconds left in the half.  Carter Schnoor scored from the 1, to put the lead at 28-14 at intermission.

From that point on, the game was always just out of reach due to untimely turnovers or penalty.  Randolph moves to 4-1 with the win and the Eagles drop to 3-2.

Leading rusher for the Eagles was Kyle Smith with 64 yards on 20 carries.  He also threw 9 completions for 157 yards and touchdown.   Freshmen, Kobe Kumm, threw for 100 yards on three completions.  Jacob Williams caught 4 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, and Devin Twohig hauled in 8 for 104 yards.

Defensively, Isaac Verzani led the troops with 14 stops.  Noah Carr and Blake McCorkindale added 13 and 11 respectfully.

Next up for the Eagles are the 2-3 Winside Wildcats at Allen on Friday, October 6th.  Game time is 4:00 p.m.

COACHES COMMENTS:

“We are so close to putting things together if the dropped passes, fumbles, and untimely missed assignments stop….a handful of plays put us in a position we could not recover from.  That is our agenda for the next week is to be error free or as close as possible.”
