Eagles down Falcons for Homecoming win….46-20…….

The Eagles of Allen upped their season record to 3-0 with a 46-20 win over Elkhorn Valley, Friday night in Allen.

The Falcons entered the game winless, and provided a very inspired effort during the entire evening.

The Eagles struck first recovering and returning a Falcon punt snap error to the E-V one yard line, and Kyle Smith ran over from the one yard line.  Blake McCorkindale added the PAT run to make the score 8-0.

The Eagles then held Elkhorn Valley and drove the field, ending on a Blake McCorkindale 12 yard run.  Smith connected with Jacob Williams to add the PAT, and raise the score to 16-0 at the end of one period.

The Eagles stumbled three times in the second period after establishing some very good drives that potentially had scoring potential.  One interception and two fumbles hamstringed the offense and kept the Falcons in the game.

The Falcons scored with 16 seconds prior to half time on a short pass trimming the score to 16-6.  The Eagles after the ensuing kickoff scored on a one play drive of 58 yards by Smith.  Smith then hit Devin Twohig with the PAT pass to up the score to 24-6 at intermission.

The Eagles tacked two quick scores in the third period on runs by Smith of 35 yards and McCorkindale for three yards.  Smith hit O.T. Roth early in the fourth period to push the lead to 46-6.  Elkhorn Valley scored late on two passes after the game was decided.

Offensively, the mishandling of the football and two untimely penalties kept the Eagle offense from really rolling up larger numbers statistically.  Smith, McCorkindale, and Kobe Kumm had fine offensive numbers.

Defensively, the Eagles took the ball away five times from Elkhorn Valley.  Sophomore, Brogan Jones led the tacklers with 13, freshmen, Anthony Isom had 10, and junior, Isaac Verzani added 9.  Jacob Williams led the takeaway charge with a fumble recovery and interception.

The Eagles, 3-0, travel to Wynot on Friday, to open district action.  Game time has been changed to 6:30 p.m.

COACHES COMMENTS:

“We did not have a very good first half offensive football, allowing Elkhorn Valley to stay in the game.  3 turnovers during the second period had us all frustrated.  We cannot do those things and expect to continue to win games.  Defensively, the five takeaways were key in not allowing E-V a chance to stay close.  The team will need to really focus their efforts this week, as Wynot is a very athletic and huge team.”
